How will the project affect me? Information for staff

The project to transform Bentham House means that the way that we teach, work and study in the Faculty will change during refurbishment period. As a result of the works to Bentham House, the Faculty has left the building and moved to alternative accommodation nearby at Bidborough House.

When will UCL Laws leave Bentham House?

We moved out of Bentham House at the end of Term 3 2015.

When will we reoccupy Bentham House?

We hope to be able to reoccupy Bentham House in the summer of 2017.

Where will teaching take place?

Teaching will take place across the UCL Bloomsbury Campus and at other academic institutions in the area. Teaching may also be hosted at external training and event facilities based in Bloomsbury.

There may be very limited small group tutorial teaching in Bidborough House, but we are not able to host large scale teaching activities there.

Where will I meet my students for personal tutorials?

There are multiple small meeting rooms within Bidborough House to provide space for personal tutorials and other academic and pastoral support.

Where will I be located in Bidborough House?

The majority of Academic staff are on the first floor of Bidborough House, with Professional Services teams, Research staff, Teaching Fellows and Emeriti occupying the ground floor.

There is also be some space for students to use on the ground floor, but this is separate from staff areas.

Where can I hold meetings?

There are a number of meeting rooms reserved for members of the Faculty to use at Bidborough House, including:

  • Eight small meeting rooms for up to three people
  • Three medium-sized meeting rooms for up to six people
  • Three large meeting rooms for up to ten people.

Additional meeting rooms on other floors of Bidborough House are available for staff to book when necessary. Larger meeting rooms in the building will be equipped with AV facilities.

Do I have space for personal storage?

Under-desk storage units are provided for all staff at Bidborough House.

What will happen to my office in Bentham House?

Some areas of Bentham House will be unaffected by the building and refurbishment works. Therefore, it may be possible to store equipment and furniture in the building during the decant period. We are currently determining what access to Bentham House will be available during the decant period and investigating options for alternative, appropriate storage solutions.

If your office is located in one of the areas of Bentham House that will not be affected by the works, we hope that your office will remain as it is for the duration of the project.

We can transport the equipment and resources that you will need access to during the decant period, and which can be accommodated in the space available in Bidborough House, from your office at Bentham House.

We will also be able to discuss alternative storage and access arrangements if items that you will need cannot be accommodated in the space available at Bidborough House.

  • My office is currently in Bentham House, and will be lost as a result of the redevelopment

If your office will be lost as a result of the redevelopment works in Bentham House, you have access to the same storage provision in Bidborough House as all other staff for the items that you will need to use during the decant period. We will discuss storage arrangements with you for other furniture, equipment and resources that cannot be accommodated at Bidborough House.

  • My office is currently in Hillel House

If your office is based in Hillel House, you have access to the same storage provision in Bidborough House as all other staff for the items that you will need to use during the decant period. We will discuss storage arrangements with you for other furniture, equipment and resources that cannot be accommodated at Bidborough House.

What other facilities are available at Bidborough House?

  • Large kitchens on the ground and first floors, as well as an additional ‘tea point’ on the first floor.
  • A large secure cycle parking space in the basement
  • Shower, changing room and locker facilities for staff
